My Service on the Essex Conservation & Trails Committee

I’m committed to rolling up my sleeves and volunteering to make our Town a better place.

I was appointed to the Conservation & Trails Committee on January 24, 2022. This was during the last spongy moth infestation. My first project was representing the committee in a public outreach program to meet with HOAs and individual homeowners with significant oak tree populations. Our town has quite a few.

I provided information on recognizing infestations, how to handle egg masses, how to help trees recover and, for particularly vulnerable and high risk trees, what kind of treatments were available.

I helped with establishing and then re-establishing our Town’s Tree City Status with the Arbor Day Foundation. This is a commitment to maintaining a certain level of tree-related activity each year. The photo is of an Arbor Day celebration – another requirement.

I was elected chair on July 9, 2024 and reelected again July 8, 2025. I have overseen advising the Development Review Board on many development applications, Parks and Recreation on trails and forest management, and Community Development on the Keystone trail project.  We advised VTrans on culvert repair projects and provided input on Governor Scott’s Executive Order 06-25 -- Proposed Wetlands Rule Changes.

I also served as the committee representative on the last Town Plan working group and was responsible for the method of wide community outreach used. Later, I helped process the gathered data and created the word clouds included in the plan. My committee contributed many action items that ended up in the final Town Plan.

Most important is my role enabling committee members in their individual projects, which include (but is not limited to):

  • Complying with Act 171;
  • Establishing a tree nursery to provide a cost effective source to replace dying green ash trees prevalent through some developments;
  • Completing the requisite conservation fund survey; and
  • Identifying and applying for the use of Conservation Funds to acquire a riverside parcel for a park and a long-sought human-powered boat access along the Winooski River.
